It is known that in the 2nd century B.C.E. Olympos has its own coins. Moreover, it was one of six the most powerful cities of ancient Lycia. As said in an old legend, Olympos people worshiped Hephaestus and the city was governed by Romans for a long period which motivated a rapid development of architecture, science and trade. Obviously, the Genoese and Venice merchants also contributed to the development of this city bringing here their goods. But the power of Olympos finished in the destructive 15th century when the Ottomans camw to this region.

Modern Olynpos is an amazing sight in Turkey which attracts the amateurs of the ancient history from the whole world. You will be impressed by the amount of the monuments, you will be able to be transported to another world and perceive the culture which made so many inventions and discoveries. There are several objects which are worth to be notices, for example, two Lycian tombs and the remnants of the mooring wall. There is a wonderful Byzantine fortress which demonstrates the wisdom of antique architectures as well as the basement of the bridge over the river.

It is possible to watch the details of the bridge. There are a marble doorway and villa built during the Byzantine period, a small mausoleum and aqueduct which was the prototype of the modern water system. It is a perfect place to meditate as it seems that the time really stopped here.

Olymplos is a part of the most outstanding Turkish sights and it is definitely worth visiting!
