Side is a beautiful city with a great history which is located on a small peninsula between Antalya and Alanya. The distance to Antalya is 80 km and there are 50 km to Alanya.
The recorded history of Side began in VII century B.C.E. when the first Greek colonists came to the peninsula. Local people were speaking their own Side language that time while at the end of the second century B.C.E. Greek totally substituted it.
The city was named in honor of the nymph Side and it means “pomegranate” in Anatolian version.
There were plenty of significant historical facts connected to the city. The most prominent scenes are the following: in 334 B.C.E. the city surrendered to the army of Alexander the Great without any opposition; in 190 B.C.E Side witnessed the sea battle between Rodos and Syria (the Syrian force was led by the famous Carthage commander Hannibal), in the first century B.C.E. the city became the biggest center of slave-trade as it was occupied by pirates.
It is a must to visit Side as you will see a perfectly preserved amphitheatre built for 18 thousand people, gates to the city, ruins of the temples of Dionysus and Apollo and many other spectacular buildings and objects.
